When I was 17, my girlfriend at the time was finally ready to have sex. I, as one might expect of a 17 year old, was excited. Neither hell nor high water was going to stand between me and my final destination.

Vikings … and other problems from History

When I was just a lad, I dropped history like a stone at the first possible opportunity – the end of my 3rd year (which is probably the equivalent of year 27, or something like that, in modern education parlance). This turned out to be a strange turn of events as, in subsequent adulthood, history turned out to be one of my favourite subjects. I eventually took up the subject again, gaining a double first from Oxford.

I would like to start with an apology to regular reader The Divine Mr M*, as this blog will come as a shock when it appears in his inbox. While I did give him advance warning that there would be no new musings this week, a few beers while watching le Tour got me to thinking and, at 10pm on a Friday night, here I am (or technically, there I was) – the life of a newly single middle-aged man is surely one of diversity!

Eye of the Tiger

This is not the blog I set out to write this week. I had it all planned out – from Dolly Parton at Gastonbury via sorting out my iTunes and discovering I have more jazz than I thought (I only thought I had this), the strange story of the cat, the bowl of soup and a beach towel, to brewing a new lot of beer from a ‘Festival’ kit, so neatly linking back to Glastonbury again. Believe me when I say, it would have been great.
